BelOrta launches its summer tomato range

Sint-Katelijne-Waver, 9 March 2026 – With the first sunny days of summer, BelOrta traditionally kicks off its summer tomato range. The start of the production of Coeur de Boeuf, San Marzano, Velvet Rose and our Heirloom range is a key moment for those seeking added value.

Coeur de Boeuf first in the range

This tomato, known for its distinctive heart shape and mild, aromatic flavour, ripens from the inside out. This means the inside can be perfectly red and ripe while the outside still shows a greenish hue.

These first Coeur de Boeuf tomatoes come from the Vertommen family (Den Overkant in Sint-Katelijne-Waver). As a family business, they have more than 15 years of experience growing Coeur de Boeuf tomatoes and over 30 years of tomato expertise in total. Thanks to this long-standing know-how, more and more Southern European customers are also asking for BelOrta’s Coeur de Boeuf tomatoes. They are sold both loose and pre-packed.

The Coeur de Boeuf season runs from early March until the end of November. In 2025, around 2.4 million kilograms of this tomato were marketed through BelOrta.

San Marzano and d’Antan tomatoes enrich the range once again

San Marzano is also back in the range. This elongated tomato is known as a true sauce tomato, with a distinctive southern flavour and excellent shelf life. Its season runs from mid-March to the end of November.

In addition, there are the d’Antan tomatoes: very fleshy, vintage varieties with a pronounced flavour and plenty of flesh. They are available as a colourful mix or per colour and are in season from the end of March until mid-November. In 2025, around 700,000 kilograms of the d’Antan mix were sold through BelOrta.

At BelOrta, all these tomatoes are still harvested and sorted by hand, with care and attention for preserving traditional varieties with authentic characteristics.

Growing interest in diversity

Due to the warm summer in 2025 and major production issues in Southern Europe, there was strong demand for more distinctive tomato types. One example is Velvet Rose. Known for its unique colour, this tomato is now once again available for the first time this year.

Consumers looking for variety and flavour often turn to these specialties. For the new season, BelOrta also expects continued interest from retail, where retailers increasingly aim to stand out with a more diverse tomato assortment.
