Sweet pointed pepper a staple in the vegetable range
This morning, the first pointed peppers of the season were sold, supplied by Bart Ceulemans (Grobar) from Berlaar, who has been growing pointed peppers and a variety of chillies for over 10 years.
On the same day, the Provincial Horticultural School in Mechelen also delivered its first sweet pointed peppers. There, young people are prepared for a career in the fruit and vegetable sector and gain their first hands-on experience in cultivation.
“Sweet pointed peppers have grown into a staple within the range in recent years. Their sweet flavour and broad versatility, both raw and in prepared dishes, mean they continue to meet consumer demand,” says Sanne De Coster, Sales Supervisor at BelOrta. Together, BelOrta growers supplied around 1.85 million kg.
Fleurs de courgette as a refined seasonal product
The first courgette flowers, also known as fleurs de courgette, were supplied by grower Paul Van Dessel from Sint-Katelijne-Waver, who specialises in various courgette varieties.
“Fleurs de courgette are a particularly refined seasonal product that is especially sought after in gastronomy. Thanks to their delicate flavour and decorative appearance, they are often prepared fresh, for example stuffed or lightly fried. As they are a fragile product, the flowers are carefully harvested and offered exclusively on demand,” says Bruno Vuerinckx, Sales Supervisor at BelOrta.
In 2025, BelOrta producers supplied more than 137,000 courgette flowers and nearly 8.3 million green courgettes. In addition, BelOrta sold just over 2.7 million other varieties, such as yellow and white courgettes and the round courgette, courgette de Nice.
