BelOrta introduces Bestum® as a promising newcomer

Sint-Katelijne-Waver, May 6, 2025 – As the days get longer and the summer approaches, the availability of locally grown berries continues to expand. Consumers can already enjoy fresh BelOrta strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Soon, red berries will be added, and in early June, the first blueberries are expected. This way, the Belgian berry season is gradually getting into full swing.

Local berries a shopping basket staple

Figures from CPS GfK Belgium (commissioned by VLAM) show that in 2024, Belgians consumed an average of 2.9 kilograms of berries, including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and cherries. “It’s no surprise that berries are so popular,” says Miguel Demaeght, Head of Berry Sales at BelOrta. “They’re not only delicious, but also fit perfectly within the trend for fresh, healthy and local eating.”

Long-term data confirms this trend: the volume of fresh berries purchased per Belgian has increased more than sixfold in 20 years, from 0.097 kg in 2002 to 0.636 kg in 2024 (period July ’23 – June ’24). Blueberries are gaining popularity particularly quickly, while blackberries still have room to grow. Strawberries remain a constant favourite in the Belgian shopping basket, with the average per capita purchase rising from 1.45 kg in 2002 to 1.75 kg in 2024.

BelOrta introduces a new blackberry variety

This season, BelOrta is introducing a promising new addition to its blackberry range. Bestum® is a new Belgian variety developed with a focus on flavour, texture and ease of cultivation. The berry stands out for its consistently sweet taste, firm bite, long shelf life and attractive fruit. What’s more, the thornless plants make for an easier harvest.

“The name Bestum® is inspired by the Latin ‘Festum’, meaning celebration,” explains Aline Royakkers, a BelOrta grower. “With this blackberry, we want to highlight the joy of healthy indulgence. Thanks to its sweet flavour, every berry is a real treat.”

Still, blackberry consumption remains limited for now. They are still something of a niche product, purchased by only a small share of Belgian households. “That means there’s still plenty of growth potential,” Demaeght confirms. “Blackberries used to be on the sour side, but with better variety selection, they’re now much sweeter and more appealing to a wider audience.”

Longer berry enjoyment thanks to smart growing

By combining different varieties and cultivation systems, BelOrta can extend the availability of locally grown berries over a longer season. Raspberries and blackberries are available until the end of November, redcurrants until Christmas, blueberries until mid-September, and gooseberries until early August. Almost all berries are also available in an organic version.
