As passionate fruit growers, Ruth and Frans Schrijnwerkers devote themselves every day to growing healthy, flavoursome blueberries. Since 1990, they have been running their farm in Gruitrode, Limburg, where quality, expertise and innovation go hand in hand. As much as 95% of the crop is still picked by hand, with close attention to detail and respect for the fruit.
A life among the bushes
Ruth got into berry growing through her husband, who had been working among the bushes from an early age. “When I met Frans in 1986, I was immediately swept up in the world of blueberries. And it has never let me go,” she laughs. What moves her most? “The moment when the clusters turn a beautiful blue. That’s when you think: wow, this is the reward for months of work.”
Local, sustainable and proudly sold
Nothing beats the taste of freshly picked local berries. “They are delicious simply eaten by the handful,” says Ruth. “But in smoothies, on pancakes or in a blueberry tart? Irresistible!”
Ruth emphasises: “Growing locally is incredibly important. We know our berries, make sure they are picked at exactly the right time and sell them with pride. You can really taste that love for the profession.”
Sustainability is a natural part of the business. New storage and season-extension techniques ensure that supply is increasingly well aligned with the market. “Since 2007, technology has allowed us to extend the season by up to four weeks. That makes a world of difference.”
Alongside all the hard work, there is also time to relax. Ruth enjoys walking through the plantation with the dogs, while Frans likes exploring the countryside on his quad bike.
A lovely anecdote
Ruth still remembers clearly how it all began: “There wasn’t much of an age difference between us and the first seasonal workers who came to work here. As a result, close friendships quickly developed. We are still in touch with some of them today, decades later. That human side of the work, where you build something together, is something I will always remember.”
The grower’s tip
“We know the local blueberry season is short, but you can enjoy them all year round by freezing them. Frozen berries are ideal for smoothies, yoghurt, pancakes, biscuits or a clafoutis. They are even better than fresh berries for making jam, as they release more juice. That way, you can enjoy a taste of summer berries all year round!”
