The first strawberries were grown by the Meyers family (Meyers Softfruit from Riemst) and the Colembie family (Colemberry from Sprang-Capelle) and were purchased by Spar Colruyt Group. The Colembie family is supplying strawberries of the Lady Emma variety, while the Meyers family is starting with the Sonsation variety. This officially kicks off the new strawberry season.
Stable volumes and a strong market position
In 2025, BelOrta achieved a total volume of over 11 million kilograms of strawberries, an increase of around 700,000 kilograms compared to 2024.
“The supply is gradually picking up and will continue to increase in the coming weeks. Thanks to the spread of varieties and growing periods, we can offer our customers high-quality Belgian strawberries over an extended period,” says Miguel Demaeght, Soft Fruit Division Manager at BelOrta.
During the peak period, from April to July, weekly volumes rise significantly, ensuring a broad and consistent supply.
Wide range and distinctive flavour profile
The range continues to evolve, with a clear rise in everbearing varieties that produce multiple times throughout the season. Lady Emma and Karima remain the key drivers, while Florice is also gaining strong ground. In spring, Sonsation remains a trusted staple, and Parlando is the fastest riser among the early varieties. In open-field cultivation, Malling Centenary and Sonsation continue to be the main varieties.
Thanks to this well-considered selection of varieties and cultivation planning, growers can respond to different harvest times and market needs throughout the season.
